Trekking Gears

For the trekking trips offered in OBT Online, you carry a day pack (This should be comfortable and a good waist band that transfers some of the weight to the hips is most important. It needs to be big enough to take a jacket, fleece, water, camera and odds and ends.) And pack the rest in a water-proof duffle bag for the porters (or sometimes yaks/horses) to carry.

The style of trek (lodge-style or camping style), area you are trekking in and time of the year will play a significant factor as to the type of gears to bring along.  The following is a general checklist to base your preparation upon for a camping-style trek :

CLOTHES
loose-fitting long pants
long-sleeve shirt (wool or pile)
long-sleeve shirt (cotton)
underwear
thermal underwear (tops and bottoms)
liner socks
wool or pile socks

OUTERWEAR

wind/rain jacket
down jacket with hood
liner gloves
wool gloves
wool hat (40 to 75% of the body heat is lost through the head)
sun hat or visor

OTHER ITEMS

umbrella
down booties
poncho
balaclava
camera with spare batteries
Money pouch/belt/inside pocket
PERSONAL ITEMS
water bottles (2-3 litres, able to hold hot water)
flashlight and battery cells
pocket knife
plastic bags
sunglasses that protect from UV rays

TOILETRIES

toothbrush and toothpaste
waterproof sunscreen with UVA & UVB protection
lip protection cream
moisturiser
first aid kit (see below)
water purifying tablets
toilet paper
bath and laundry soap
towel
shampoo
repair kit (needle,thread, tape, strong glue etc)
Wet tissues

FOOTWEAR

hiking boots
sandals with ankle straps   

First Aid Kit

dressing and bandages, blister treatment, cotton swabs
eye-wash for washing out dust
thermometer
disposable needles
medications - aspirin, paracetamol, various antibiotics for diarrhoea, Diamox (an acclimatising aid drug), antiseptic, sore throat, cold/flu, decongestants.
skin applications - disinfectant cream/solution, cream for insect bites, rashes, irritation from sunburn, muscle rub.
